Content Standards and Competencies

  • Demonstrate knowledge of underground utility systems including water, sewer, gas and telecommunications.
  • Apply safety standards, OSHA regulations, and environmental practices in excavation and installation.
  • Operate and maintain industry-standard tools and heavy equipment safely and effectively.
  • Interpret and use blueprints, site plans, and geographic information systems (GIS) for utility projects.
  • Demonstrate skills in pipefitting, conduit installation, and system connections.
  • Apply problem-solving strategies to identify and correct issues in underground systems.
  • Perform inspections, testing, and maintenance on installed utility systems.
  • Exhibit customer service, professionalism, and teamwork in field operations.
  • Recognize regulations and requirements for utility locating and "Call Before You Dig" compliance.

  • Underground Utilities Pathway

    The Underground Utilities pathway at the Pike Career and STEM Center is designed for students who enjoy hands-on work and real-world learning experiences. This program introduces students to the field of underground utility locating, a critical career that protects infrastructure and keeps communities safe. Students learn the history and purpose of different utility types, installation methods, and the theory of electromagnetic locating used to find underground lines.

    Students gain practical experience in blueprint reading, electrical theory, equipment operation, job site safety, and industry-standard locating techniques. They develop a strong understanding of safe work practices, professional responsibility, and the skills needed to work in outdoor and field-based environments. Students also have opportunities to participate in live job site experiences alongside their instructor, giving them authentic exposure to the industry.

    • Career Readiness Training
    • OSHA 10-hour Outreach Training Card (Industry Recognition)
    • In-person and practical field experiences

    The Underground Utilities program partners with USIC, providing students with a direct pathway to employment after high school. This partnership allows students to move from classroom learning into real careers with strong job stability and growth potential.

    Graduates of the Underground Utilities pathway are prepared for entry-level positions in underground utility locating and related infrastructure fields. This program equips students with technical skills, safety certifications, and real-world experience, making it an excellent option for students seeking immediate workforce opportunities in a high-demand industry.
