Content Standards and Competencies
- Demonstrate proper safety practices and environmental responsibility in the automotive workplace.
- Identify and correctly use automotive tools, equipment, and diagnostic technology.
- Perform preventive maintenance and inspection procedures on vehicles.
- Diagnose and repair engine performance, electrical, suspension, steering, brake, and HVAC systems.
- Interpret and apply technical manuals, service information, and electronic resources.
- Apply mathematical, scientific, and mechanical principles to automotive systems.
- Communicate effectively with customers, peers, and supervisors using industry.
- Demonstrate teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills in a shop environment.

Automotive Technology Pathway
The Automotive Technology pathway at the Pike Career and STEM Center is perfect for students who enjoy working with cars and want hands-on experience in vehicle maintenance and repair. Students learn essential automotive skills including engine systems, brakes, tire rotation, wheel alignment, and general vehicle service while working on late-model vehicles donated by local area dealerships. This gives students access to current technology and equipment used in today’s automotive industry.
This program emphasizes real-world application through diagnostic testing, troubleshooting, and problem-solving in a fully equipped auto lab. Students gain practical experience identifying and repairing mechanical issues, preparing them for immediate entry into the workforce or continued education in automotive technology.
Students also have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized credentials, including ASE Auto/Light Truck Technician certification, Ivy Tech dual credit for college coursework, and Career Readiness Training. These certifications help students stand out to employers and provide a strong foundation for future success in the automotive field.
Graduates of the Automotive Technology pathway are prepared for careers as automotive technicians, service advisors, maintenance specialists, and other automotive industry professionals. This pathway combines technical training, certification opportunities, and hands-on learning to drive students toward high-demand, high-skill careers.
