Cosmetology & Barbering Pathway
The Cosmetology and Barbering pathway at the Pike Career and STEM Center introduces students to the principles of professional hair and beauty services through both theory and hands-on practice. Students learn essential skills such as roller control, quick styling, shampooing, hair coloring, facials, manicuring, and proper sanitation procedures. These foundational skills prepare students for real-world salon and barber shop environments while building professionalism and technical confidence.
After completing the fundamentals, students have the opportunity to specialize in either Advanced Barbering or Advanced Cosmetology. Advanced Barbering focuses on advanced styling, hair coloring, facials, facial hair care, salon management, and an understanding of license laws. Advanced Cosmetology emphasizes advanced styling, hair coloring, facials, manicuring, and includes additional study in anatomy and physiology related to cosmetology. This structure allows students to tailor their education to their specific career interests.
Students gain valuable real-world experience through Career Readiness Training and hands-on practice with clients by appointment. The program also offers college credit opportunities through Vincennes University’s Project EXCEL (up to 12 credits) and prepares students for the Indiana State Board of Cosmetology License Certification. These credentials give students a strong advantage as they enter the workforce or continue their education.
Graduates of the Cosmetology and Barbering pathway are prepared for careers as licensed cosmetologists, barbers, salon professionals, and future business owners in the beauty industry. This pathway combines technical skill development, industry certification, and professional training to help students turn creativity into a rewarding career.
