Content Standards and Competencies
- Demonstrate knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology as it relates to emergency care.
- Assess patient conditions using primary and secondary assessment techniques.
- Apply life-saving skills including CPR, airway management, bleeding control, splinting, and vital signs monitoring.
- Understand and follow EMS protocols, legal guidelines, and ethical responsibilities.
- Operate safely and effectively in high-pressure, time-sensitive environments.
- Utilize emergency medical equipment such as AEDs, oxygen delivery systems, and immobilization devices.
- Demonstrate scene management, prioritization, and triage decision-making.
- Communicate clearly with patients, bystanders, dispatch, and healthcare professionals.
- Document patient care accurately using standard EMS reporting methods.
- Collaborate as part of an emergency response team to deliver coordinated care.
- Integrate technology in emergency medicine, including digital reporting and monitoring tools.
- Explore career pathways such as EMT, Paramedic, Fire Rescue, and other public safety professions.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Pathway
The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) pathway at the Pike Career and STEM Center is an excellent gateway for students interested in emergency medicine and prehospital care. This demanding and rewarding program prepares students to become Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT), opening the door to careers in emergency response and healthcare. Students gain hands-on experience and professional training that mirrors real-world emergency medical environments.
The EMS program allows students to explore a wide range of career paths, including street medic, flight medic, tactical medicine, nursing, and even physician-level careers. This pathway provides a strong foundation for anyone interested in medicine, emergency services, or public safety and is an ideal starting point for long-term healthcare careers.
Students have the opportunity to earn multiple industry-recognized certifications, including:
- EMT-Basic
- EMR – Emergency Medical Responder
- Emergency Telecommunicator Certification (ETC – 911 Dispatch)
